Grub Girls Donut Mess Around

Are you tired of the regular basic sweets? Is a mediocre cake with vanilla topping or a batch of basic oatmeal cookies not satisfying your sweet tooth?

No matter what the season, anyone can enjoy a delicious doughnut from Hi-Five Doughnuts!

Hi-Five doughnuts is located on 1011 East Main Street in Louisville, Kentucky. The small yellow building decorated with sprinkles is impossible to miss. The Hi-Five doughnuts journey started with its two owners, Annie Harlow and Leslie Wilson four years ago. Their business started out with the two entrepreneurs working under a tent and serving doughnuts to tables. They slowly expanded and moved their doughnut expedition to a food truck at the Flea Off Market. That’s when their fame started to grow in Louisville, and Hi-Five doughnuts gained their popularity in this city.

This morning we had the privilege to visit Hi-Five doughnuts and talk to Annie Harlow one-on-one. Annie was a delight to talk to and she made every customer feel at home when they walked in. For instance, the elementary school down the street had its last day today. Annie interacted with the countless children who came in with their parents to buy doughnuts, congratulating them on their last day of school. In addition Hi-Five Doughnuts also has a signature birthday doughnut dowsed with cotton candy glaze and adorned with a lit candle. We were lucky enough to watch Annie deliver a birthday doughnut to a young customer, singing Happy Birthday to them while making her way over. I’m sure that type of hospitality wouldn’t be offered to you at Krispy Kreme. Besides enjoying the upbeat atmosphere of Hi-five, Annie also gave us the frosty details of the ins and outs of Hi-Five Doughnuts and why they are SO great! One of the reasons Hi-Five Doughnuts is different than their competitors is because they give their customers the opportunity to make their own doughnuts. Their menu items consist of simple drink selections like milk, bottled water, hot tea, soft drinks, coffee, and of course a multitude selections of doughnuts. Sometimes their doughnuts can be over $5 but with flavors like Hi-Five, it’s definitely worth it.

Here at Hi-Five Donuts, customers can “build your own” doughnuts or doughnut holes with variety of choices in glazes and toppings. They also have a wide selection of signature doughnuts you can choose from. For instance, there are 5 different flavors of glaze and 6 different flavors of toppings. To get the full experience we built our own doughnut picking doughnut holes and adding strawberry glaze topped with fruity pebbles. The doughnut was $5.20 including tax and it was money well spent. We also sampled their doughnut special of the day, a cinnamon stick doughnut that was only $1.33 including tax. I can hands down say it was the best cinnamon doughnut I had ever had.

Her specialties include:

  1. Mint Julep Doughnut

The Mint Julep Doughnut is topped with chocolate mint julep glaze and drizzled with Markers Mark minty glaze. It also is decorated with a flavored Mint Leaf.

  1. Vegan Doughnuts

They also offer a variety of vegan doughnuts. Their vegan doughnuts may not include the same delicious ingredients that are made with their regular doughnuts but they still taste as delectable as the main menu doughnuts. With the vegan doughnuts, you have the same opportunity to build your own doughnut just with a healthier twist.

  1. KY SMORE WITH BOURBAN MARSHMELLOW

This doughnut gives you a little taste of Kentucky. This is a plain doughnut topped with chocolate frosting with a hint of bourbon. The frosting is topped with chocolate chunks, a melted marshmallow, and graham cracker crumbs.

  1. KY Buttermilk Fried Chicken Doughnut

This doughnut puts a new twist on brunch! It is a fried glazed doughnut stuffed with crunchy buttermilk fried chicken. Topped with sweet and tangy hot sauce.

  1. Breakfast Doughnut Sandwich

This flavorful sandwich gives you both a sweet and salty taste of breakfast. It is filled with white cheddar cheese, fresh egg, apple wood bacon and mayonnaise.

Also if you are a huge fan of Hi-Five Doughnuts, you can purchase Hi-Five Doughnuts apparel. T-shirts, hats, doughnut coffee mugs are available!

Besides having phenomenal doughnuts and southern hospitality atmosphere, Hi-Five Doughnuts is located in a cool area downtown called Butchertown. After getting yourself a mouthwatering doughnut, you can head on over to Red Hot Roasters Coffee just down the street! In addition to breakfast food, Butchertown also has a lot of cool local restaurants, such as Pho Ba Luu and Copper& Kings Distillery. Whoever said doughnuts and alcohol don’t mix?!

RIP Friends

Today I heard some heartbreaking news.  In a month Netflix will be getting rid of some of their most popular TV shows.  These shows include One Tree Hill, Parks and Recreation, Grey’s Anatomy, The Office, Gossip Girl, and Friends.  Now if this is your first time hearing this tragic news you’re probably going to want to take a moment to let that sink in.  That’s right, no more Chad Michael Murray in basketball shorts, no more Mcsteamy or Mcdreamy, and it may very well be the last time you hear “XO XO, Gossip Girl!”  While it may be painful I think I can almost forgive Netflix for bestowing this great loss upon us.  After all, Grey’s Anatomy plays reruns on TV all the time, One Tree Hill is so old that you can probably find it for free online, and I’ve re-watched Gossip Girl 4 times through.  However, there is one show that I will not forgive Netflix for getting rid of and that is Friends!

Here’s a list of 5 Reasons why we’ll miss Friends.  You may read while you mourn…

  1. It’s Still Relevant Today

Friends gives us valuable life lessons.  For example, never hook up with someone else when you’re on a break from your significant other for less than 2 hours.  (cough, cough, Ross!)

  1. The Theme Song

The Friend’s theme song is legendary!  It’s almost impossible to NOT sing along.

  1. Chandler Bing

Sure, we all have our favorite Friends characters but Chandler was the true comic relief of the show.  The man took sarcasm to the next level!

  1. The Cameos

Nothing will beat the Thanksgiving episode where Brad Pitt guest stars!  The whole episode is centered around his character hating Rachel and of course how good looking he is…

  1. They’re as Confused and Awkward as Anyone Else in Their Mid-20s

Unlike other TV shows where the characters seem to have their lives together straight out of high school the Friends Crew shows us that it’s okay to have no clue what you’re doing in life.  (See Rachel/runaway bride and Joey’s acting career)

King Arthur Movie Review

Image result for king arthur movie

In honor of discounted movies on Tuesdays my boyfriend and I decided to go and see King Arthur today.  The movie was neither of our first choices.  I was leaning towards the new chick flick with Nick Robinson and he wanted to watch the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy.  So, we compromised and decided on King Arthur and it was a lot better than I had thought it would be.

To start off I had really low expectations for this movie.  I vaguely knew the stories of King Arthur from learning about them in junior high.  I expected the movie to be a boring tale of knights sitting around a circular table discussing war strategies.  However, the movie started out at a quick pace and barely slowed down throughout the duration of the film.  In the beginning King Arthur goes into an adventurous background story about Excalibur (the infamous sword in the stone) Unlike the original tales of King Arthur that don’t fully explain why Arthur was picked to pull the sword, the movie draws a direct line between the sword and Arthur’s father.  The movie also had an enchanted feel to it with the sword’s power coming from the all-powerful sorcerer, Merlin and a mage that could control animals.

The only negative aspect I picked up on throughout the movie was the use of time lapses.  Time lapses help show how the character progresses throughout a long time period but are shown through a few minutes or less, usually accompanied by some type of song or background music.   While I think time lapses are a cool idea using 3 different ones in the same movie is a little excessive.  If anything I wondered why they couldn’t make a few of the time lapses movies of their own.

Overall, King Arthur is a heroic tale about an ordinary boy who becomes King.  if you like the world of kings and knights dueling to take over kingdoms this movie is something you’ll want to see.  Also from a girl’s perspective, the main character isn’t bad to look at.

Starbucks Drinks for Coffee Haters

To all of you coffee haters out there that are constantly being dragged to Starbucks by your caffeine addicted friends here is a list of 5 delicious Starbucks drinks to make your coffee shop visit more tolerable!

  1. Strawberry and Crème Frappuccino:

This delectable beverage is a signature Starbucks Frappuccino that is similar to a blended strawberries and milk smoothie.  Since the drink is made with strawberries it is a healthier option compared to other Frappuccinos on the menu. To make the drink ever healthier you can ask for skim or soy milk.

2.  Iced Chai Tea Latte:

Even as a coffee lover, I tend to lean towards this particular drink anytime I enter Starbucks.  If you’re into tea in the morning this might be the drink for you.  The chai also gives the beverage a little kick and the latte gives the drink a creamy substance.

3.   Passion Shaken Iced Tea:

The passion shaken iced tea is a mix of tropical flavors and hibiscus.  Since it’s hand shaken with ice it makes a great mid-afternoon treat for a hot summer day.

4.   Vanilla Bean Frappuccino:

I’d recommend this drink to anyone that loves vanilla ice cream.  It consists of vanilla bean blend, milk and ice and it’s topped off with Starbuck’s heavenly whipped cream.  It’s practically an ice cream cone in a cup.

5.   Starbucks Hot Chocolate:

Summer shouldn’t stop you from enjoying a Starbuck’s hot chocolate.  Starbucks perfects these drinks by steaming milk and mixing the beverage with vanilla or mocha flavors.  If you’re feeling festive you can also add a shot of peppermint syrup to top it off!

Working at Phone-a-thon

Since September of last year, I have been working at the University of Louisville Phone-a-thon.  Phone-a-thon is in the Alumni Center at the University of Louisville.  The job is simple enough and consists of students calling alumni and previous donors to ask for donations for branches or scholarships to the school.  Like most jobs working at Phone-a-thon has its pros and cons.

CONS

It Can be Awkward:

Starting out, asking for money from strangers is a little weird.  It gets even stranger if you know the person.  For example, I once called my dentist who graduated from the University of Louisville Dental School.  I’m dreading my next dental appointment with him especially since he was highly rude on the phone.

People Are Rude:

Don’t get me wrong, once I’m a graduate and get a call from Phone-a-thon asking for a donation I probably won’t give.  Mainly because I’ll be swimming in student loan debt…  However, cussing out a student caller or listing off reasons as to why I’m so mad about receiving the call are completely unnecessary.

Sometimes People Are Just Strange:

I once had a phone call with an individual who ranted for 25 minutes about her cat’s health issues.  Enough said…

PROS

We Can Do Our Homework:

Yes, working at a call center isn’t always the easiest job but student callers at phone-a-thon have the opportunity to do their homework when they call.  Not a lot of jobs allow that.

Good Hours:

At Phone-a-thon we can make our own schedules and we only have to work a minimum of 12 hours a week!

Sometimes We Get Free Food:

On occasions, we get food which is always a plus to broke college students.  Sometimes it may be catering from the alumni center or candy for receiving a donation!  Either way I’m not complaining.

The Meaning Behind A Rose

“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet…” (Shakespeare) In general, roses are historically known to be associated with romance.  While I’m always a sucker for being gifted any type of flower, roses are particularly well-known and the different types of roses convey different meanings associated with them.

First and Most Popular, The Red Rose:

Like stated earlier the red rose is classically associated with romance and love.  They are a great gift for an anniversary with your significant other and a perfect way to show your affection towards a certain individual.

Yellow Rose:

The yellow rose is a perfect gift to give to your best friend, a niece, or daughter. Yellow roses symbolize friendship and joy and are meant to induce happiness to whomever receives this lovely flower.

Pink Rose:

Pink roses are sophisticated.  They also symbolize gracefulness.  Pink roses are often given to ballerinas after a recital or actors after a performance.  They also are a cool gift to give to a co-worker or friend who has been promoted at work or graduated from school.

Purple Rose:

Purple roses are my personal favorite rose.  They symbolize enchantment and are cool gift to give to someone you are absolutely smitten by.

White Rose:

White being the color or innocence is what this rose is associated with.  They are meant to symbolize purity and are a great decoration or gift for a wedding or initiation into a sorority or other organization.

Orange Rose:

Bright and vibrant, orange roses symbolize desire, excitement, and enthusiasm.  They are a great gift to lift someone’s spirits.  Rather it be a family member in the hospital or a friend that’s having a bad day, an orange rose will surely make them smile.
